BuddyPress is free and open source, which is a big plus for some. phpFox gives you a more complete, ready-to-go platform though, often with better built-in features without needing a ton of plugins.

It really depends on what you need. phpFox usually has more bells and whistles out of the box and is a standalone product. BuddyPress integrates with WordPress, so if you're already on WP and want something lighter, that might be easier. I found phpFox setup a bit more straightforward if you're not super techy with WordPress themes and plugins.

You can upgrade for sure. I did that last year. Just go to your client area and there should be an option to upgrade your existing license.

Yep, they let you upgrade. It's not like you have to buy a whole new license. They calculate the difference you owe. Pretty standard for software licenses like this.
